**Route 1: JEE Main → JoSAA (NIT/IIIT/GFTI)**
*Cost*: INR 9-20 lakh 4-year for general candidates; INR 4-6 lakh for SC/ST/EWS with full waiver.
*Cutoffs*: NIT Trichy CSE 1500-2500 AIR; NIT Surathkal CSE 1800-3500; NIT Calicut CSE 3500-5500; IIIT Hyderabad (JEE Main route) AIR 1200-1800; IIIT Allahabad CSE 4500; IIITDM Jabalpur CSE 11500.
*Branches available*: Full breadth — CSE, ECE, EEE, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Aerospace, Material Science, etc. (16-20 branches per NIT).
*Placement*: Top NITs (Trichy, Surathkal) average INR 22-26 LPA CSE. Older NITs (Warangal, Calicut, Rourkela) INR 18-22 LPA. Newer NITs (Goa, Sikkim, Mizoram) INR 12-15 LPA.
*Probability calculation*: Top 10K AIR → top 5 NITs CSE possible. 10-25K AIR → older NITs CSE/non-CSE. 25-50K AIR → newer NITs / PPP IIITs. Beyond 50K AIR → rarely viable.
**Route 2: State CET Quota (KCET / MHT-CET / EAMCET / TNEA / WBJEE)**
*Cost (KCET state quota at private colleges)*: INR 8-11 lakh 4-year — significantly cheaper than management quota at the same college.
*Cutoffs (Karnataka KCET 2024 GM)*: RVCE CSE 234, MSRIT CSE 850, BMSCE CSE 1250, PES UTB CSE 2800, DSCE CSE 4500.
*State-specific rules*: Karnataka domicile only for KCET state quota. Maharashtra domicile for MHT-CET state quota. AP/Telangana domicile for EAMCET. Tamil Nadu domicile for TNEA. Outside-state students cannot access state quota.
*Branches*: Same as private college offerings — typically 8-15 branches per college.
*Placement*: Same college, same branch, same placements regardless of admission route. RVCE CSE state quota student gets same placement as RVCE CSE management quota student.
**Route 3: Management/NRI Quota (private direct)**
*Cost (Karnataka management quota)*: INR 18-26 lakh 4-year all-in — 2-3x the state quota cost. NRI quota: INR 28-40+ lakh.
*Cutoffs*: COMEDK rank-based: RVCE CSE 380, MSRIT CSE 1200, BMSCE CSE 2200. JEE Main route at private: 95+ percentile for top.
*Available to*: All India + NRI/foreign students. No state domicile required.
*Branches*: Same as state quota (same college).
*Placement*: Same as state quota.
**Direct cost comparison: RVCE Bangalore CSE 4-year**
| Route | Cutoff | 4-year cost | Eligibility | |---|---|---|---| | KCET state quota | KCET AIR 234 | INR 8-10 lakh | Karnataka domicile | | COMEDK | COMEDK AIR 380 | INR 22-25 lakh | All India | | JEE Main 15% all-India | JEE Main 96+ percentile | INR 22-25 lakh | All India | | Management quota | Lower cutoff but interview | INR 25-28 lakh | All India | | NRI quota | NRI sponsorship | INR 32-38 lakh | NRI / foreign |
INR 14-20 lakh difference between cheapest and most expensive route to the SAME college, SAME branch.
**Decision matrix**
*If you are Karnataka domicile* — Take KCET as primary route. Take COMEDK as backup. JEE Main top 4% percentile gives all-India quota access. Skip management quota unless KCET rank is unworkable.
*If you are non-Karnataka* — KCET unavailable. JEE Main → JoSAA primary for NITs/IIITs (cheaper). COMEDK + Karnataka management as Bangalore-college access path. Sample MHT-CET/TS-EAMCET for own state premium private.
*If you have JEE Main top 5% percentile* — Pursue JoSAA aggressively. NITs and PPP IIITs at general INR 14-18 lakh 4-year are the best ROI engineering education in India.
*If you have JEE Main 90-95 percentile* — JoSAA gets you newer NITs / lower-tier IIITs. State CETs may give you top tier-2 colleges. COMEDK + management quota at Bangalore tier-1 is also viable.
*If you have JEE Main below 85 percentile* — State CETs become primary. KCET / MHT-CET / TS-EAMCET / TNEA / WBJEE give state-quota access to good tier-2 private colleges at sustainable cost. Management quota at top private (BITS, VIT, SRM) requires INR 22+ lakh budget.
**The "same college, different cost" trap**
Many parents pay INR 25 lakh management quota at RVCE without realizing INR 8 lakh KCET state quota was available with Karnataka domicile. Always check domicile-eligible quota first. If your child has Karnataka domicile and gets KCET top 5K AIR, the management quota is purely wasteful. Use management quota as last resort, not first choice.
