How CollegeAndFees Verifies Engineering College Data

Source hierarchy, cross-LLM verification, refresh schedule, and what to do if you find an error.

Why This Page Exists

Engineering admissions in India are an information desert dressed up as a marketplace. The same college is quoted at three different fees on three different aggregator sites; brochures contradict the registrar; counselling-bulletin PDFs are 200 pages long and replaced overnight. We built CollegeAndFees because families deserve a single, dated, sourced answer to "what does this actually cost". This page documents exactly how we get to that answer so you can audit our work.

Source Hierarchy

For every fee, cutoff, ranking, and placement figure we publish, we work down a strict hierarchy and record the highest-tier source we could verify the figure against:

  1. Tier 1 — Primary documents. Official 2026-27 admission brochures, KEA bulletins, COMEDK handbooks, NIRF reports, NAAC accreditation letters, and direct emails from the college registrar or admission office.
  2. Tier 2 — College website. Fees, courses, and seat-matrix pages on the college's own domain. We screenshot and date these because colleges sometimes silently update them mid-cycle.
  3. Tier 3 — Government data portals. AICTE, UGC, NIRF.gov.in, KEA portal, COMEDK portal — used to corroborate accreditation status and rank-list data.
  4. Tier 4 — Verified counsellor network. Independent counsellors and admission consultants who specialise in a specific college, used as a sanity check, not a primary source.
  5. Tier 5 — Aggregator sites. Used only to surface that a number exists somewhere — never accepted as the source. If a figure can only be found on an aggregator and not in Tiers 1-4, we mark it as "data awaited" instead of publishing.

Four-LLM Cross-Check

For every major data point — fee, cutoff, NAAC grade, NIRF rank, highest package — we run an independent verification across four large language models with web access:

  • Perplexity Pro — for citation density.
  • Grok Expert mode — for adversarial cross-questioning.
  • Gemini Pro Deep Research — for breadth across lesser-known sources.
  • Claude Sonnet — for reasoning over conflicting numbers.

If three out of four converge on the same figure and Tier 1-3 sources support it, we publish. If three or more disagree, the field is held back and a human (Ankit) calls the college to break the tie.

Refresh Schedule

  • Annual full refresh — May. Every fee, course, seat-matrix, and brochure is re-pulled before the new admission cycle opens. The current dataset is for the 2026-27 academic year.
  • Cutoffs — June and August. KCET cutoffs are pulled twice in June (provisional and final), then again after Round 2 in August. COMEDK cutoffs are pulled at each round close.
  • Placements — annually in September. After most colleges publish their previous-year placement reports.
  • NIRF / NAAC — when each body publishes. NIRF in June, NAAC visits as they happen.
  • Reader corrections — within 48 hours. Routed through WhatsApp, triaged the same day they come in.

What We Do When We Cannot Verify

About 8 percent of the colleges in our database have at least one field we could not verify to Tier 3 standards. For those fields we either show "Data Awaited" or hide the field entirely and route the reader to our counsellor. We will not publish a figure we cannot stand behind. If you see a number on this site, it has cleared at least Tier 3 sourcing and the four-LLM cross-check.

Independence and Conflicts of Interest

  • No paid placements. Colleges cannot pay to be ranked higher, hidden, or featured on this site.
  • No data sale. We do not sell student leads or contact details to third parties.
  • Counsellor revenue model. Some families choose to engage our counsellor for paid premium guidance. The free WhatsApp guidance is genuinely free and carries no obligation to convert.
  • Sponsored content disclosure. If we ever run sponsored content, it will be clearly labelled as such on the page.
