FAQ

IISc FAQs

What is the NIRF ranking of IISc Bangalore?
IISc Bangalore holds India's top university ranking. 28 in 2024), and #3 in Innovation. Globally, QS World 2026 places IISc at #219 (down from #211 in 2025), Times Higher Education 2026 lists it in the 201-250 band making it the ONLY Indian university in the world top 250, and QS Asia University Rankings has it at #62. 67 in its Cycle 1 assessment (2018). This combination of rankings is unmatched by any other Indian institution, reinforcing IISc's position as the country's premier research-led university.
What is the placement record at IISc Bangalore?
IISc placements reflect its research-first character. 62 LPA across ~424 total offers. 5 LPA with 33% placed; UG 4-year only 1 student placed since most pursue higher studies. Top recruiters include Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Intel, Qualcomm, Cisco, Adobe, SAP, Samsung, Goldman Sachs, IBM, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, L&T, Tata Motors, Honeywell, Siemens, Bharat Forge, Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv, PwC and Flipkart. D. graduates proceed to higher studies at MIT, Stanford, ETH Zurich rather than industry placements, so campus placement numbers understate IISc's real career outcomes.
What scholarships and stipends are available at IISc Bangalore?
IISc offers one of India's most generous stipend and fellowship structures. B.S. (Research) students receive the INSPIRE Scholarship of ₹5,000/month (₹60,000/year), available to almost all eligible students. Integrated Ph.D scholars get approximately ₹12,400/month under the MHRD scheme. M.Tech students with GATE qualification receive ₹12,400/month, which effectively covers living expenses along with subsidised tuition. Ph.D scholars receive JRF ₹37,000-42,000/month rising to SRF ₹42,000-47,000/month. Top Ph.D candidates can secure the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) at ₹70,000-80,000/month — among India's most lucrative doctoral fellowships. SC/ST/PwD students have tuition fully WAIVED across all UG, PG and doctoral programmes, with the PwD waiver extended from AY 2024-25. Additional institute scholarships, endowed chairs, alumni-funded schemes and corporate CSR support are available.
Where is IISc Bangalore located and what is the campus like?
The Indian Institute of Science's main campus is at C.V. Raman Road, Malleswaram, Bengaluru 560012, Karnataka — a lush ~443-acre green campus (originally 371 acres donated by Maharaja of Mysore Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV in 1909) commonly referred to as "~400 acres". A second ~1,500-acre campus at Challakere in Chitradurga district houses large-scale research facilities, the Talent Development Centre and field stations. Campus infrastructure includes the JRD Tata Memorial Library (5 lakh volumes, 14,000+ current periodicals, ₹700+ crore print collection), the SERC supercomputer, the Robert Bosch Centre for Cyber-Physical Systems, ARTPARK (AI & Robotics Technology Park), Kotak IISc AI-ML Centre, Axis Bank Centre for Mathematics and Computing, and 40+ departmental facilities across 6 academic divisions. Roughly 3,000 students live on-campus including ~500 girls in dedicated hostels, with two recently built 600-capacity blocks.
Does IISc Bangalore accept JEE Main scores for B.Tech admission?
No — IISc B.Tech admissions are strictly through JEE Advanced via JoSAA counselling, NOT JEE Main. For the B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing (running since 2022 with ~52 seats) and the three new programmes launching AY 2026-27 (Aerospace Engineering, Mechanics & Computing, Materials Science & Engineering), candidates must first clear JEE Main, then qualify JEE Advanced within the eligible rank band, and participate in JoSAA counselling to be allotted an IISc seat. There is no separate IISc application form for B.Tech. JEE Main scores alone are accepted for the different B.S. (Research) programme, alongside JEE Advanced, IAT and NEET-UG (Biology track). This means aspirants targeting IISc B.Tech must prepare for JEE Advanced — the same exam used by IITs — and IISc's JEE Advanced cut-offs are among the highest in India due to its very small B.Tech intake.
What is the fee structure at IISc for 2026-27?
IISc Bangalore fees for AY 2025-26 are heavily subsidised for Indian nationals. PhD candidates pay ₹20,800/year total (tuition ₹15,000), M.Tech/M.Des ₹14,800/year (tuition ₹9,000), M.Mgt ₹15,800/year, B.Tech Mathematics & Computing ₹2,05,800/year (tuition ₹2,00,000), and BS (Research) ₹2,52,100/year (tuition ₹1,70,000 + ₹80,000 other academic fees). M.Sc Life Sciences ₹1,06,800/year and M.Sc Chemical Sciences ₹66,800/year include a bench fee component. SC/ST/PwD tuition is fully WAIVED across ALL programmes — total fees reduce to ₹5,800/year for most PG programmes. Source: Official IISc circular IISc/Acad/Fee-circular/2025 dated 2 July 2025.
How to get admission in IISc?
Admission to IISc Bangalore is strictly merit-based through admissions.iisc.ac.in. For the 4-year B.S. (Research), clear JEE Main, JEE Advanced, IAT (IISER Aptitude Test, which replaced KVPY from 2022) or NEET-UG (Biology track) with Class 12 PCM 60% aggregate. For B.Tech (Mathematics & Computing running since 2022 plus Aerospace, Mechanics & Computing, and Materials Science & Engineering launching AY 2026-27), qualify JEE Advanced and apply through JoSAA counselling. For M.Tech/M.Tech(Research) use GATE or CFTI mode (CGPA ≥ 8.0); M.Des via CEED; M.Sc via IIT JAM; M.Mgt via GATE/CAT; PhD via institute written test/interview plus GATE/CSIR-UGC NET/UGC-NET/JEST/INSPIRE. PG applications typically open February and close late March for the August intake.
What courses are offered at IISc?
IISc Bangalore offers courses across UG, PG and Doctoral levels. UG includes the 4-year B.S. (Research) with 6 majors — Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics and Physics — and B.Tech in Mathematics & Computing (launched 2022); from AY 2026-27 three new B.Tech programmes launch: Aerospace Engineering, Mechanics & Computing, and Materials Science & Engineering. PG programmes include M.Tech (Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science & Automation, Electrical, ECE, Electronic Systems, Materials, Mechanical), M.Tech (Research), M.Des, M.Sc (Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences), M.Mgt, M.Engg (1 year), Joint M.Tech Semiconductor Technology, and M.Tech Online. Doctoral: Ph.D. (2,389 scholars — India's largest) and Integrated Ph.D. In AY 2024-25 IISc offered 863 courses across 100-500 levels spread over 40+ departments in 6 divisions.
