SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital (SDMCMSH) was founded in 2003 by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, the Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala and president of the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational (SDME) Society of Ujire, as a centre for medical education and healthcare for North Karnataka 'at a reasonable cost' — the teaching hospital was registered in June 2003, a year before the first MBBS Letter of Permission of 26 July 2004 (the NMC's Year of Inception is 2004; both dates are official). Since 19 December 2018 the college sits under Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) University, Dharwad — a Karnataka STATE PRIVATE university created by Karnataka Act No. 19 of 2018, UGC-listed under Section 2(f) — which is why its MBBS and MD/MS seats run through KEA counselling (codes M036 and M27), not MCC deemed counselling.
