Karnataka has two engineering entrance exams — KCET (state government) and COMEDK (private consortium). Here's the 2026 guide on which to target.

KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test)

Conducted by: Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), state government. Unlocks: Government-quota seats at all Karnataka government + private engineering colleges. Karnataka-domicile candidates only get state-quota benefit; outside-state students compete in All-India quota at state colleges. Eligibility: Pass 10+2 with PCM, 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/OBC). Fees pathway: Lowest — government quota fees at top colleges (RVCE, BMSCE, MSRIT) ~₹85,000/year for Karnataka-domicile.

COMEDK UGET

Conducted by: Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (private body). Unlocks: COMEDK-quota seats at private engineering colleges in Karnataka. Approximately 17 colleges participate. Eligibility: All-India open — no state-domicile restriction. Pass 10+2 with PCM, 50% aggregate. Fees pathway: Mid-tier — COMEDK fees ~₹2.5-3.5 LPA/year at top private colleges. Higher than KCET government but lower than management quota.

Decision framework

Karnataka-domicile + targeting top Karnataka government quota seat: Take KCET only. Government fees ~₹85k/year is the best deal.

Outside-state + targeting top Karnataka private: Take COMEDK. Without Karnataka-domicile, KCET puts you in All-India quota with limited seats.

Karnataka-domicile + want backup at top Karnataka private: Take both. KCET for government-quota first preference, COMEDK as backup.

Want VIT/SRM/Manipal: Take their own entrances (VITEEE, SRMJEEE, MET).

Important: Top colleges'' quota mix

RVCE, BMSCE, MSRIT typical seat distribution:

  • KCET government quota: ~40-45% of seats
  • COMEDK quota: ~20-25% of seats
  • Management quota: ~25-30% of seats
  • NRI quota: ~5-10% of seats

So even at top private colleges in Karnataka, KCET is the largest pathway.
