Karnataka aspirants face three potential engineering entrance exams: KCET, JEE Main, and COMEDK. Each has different eligibility, syllabus depth, exam pattern, and college coverage.

KCET is Karnataka's state exam for government-quota seats and the cheapest route, but it needs a Karnataka eligibility clause. COMEDK UGET is open to students from any state and fills a share of seats in 150+ Karnataka private colleges. JEE Main is the national route to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, and the gateway to JEE Advanced for the IITs. Karnataka-eligible students with strong PCM usually write all three.

KCET: Conducted by KEA once a year. KCET has no English paper: engineering candidates take Physics, Chemistry and Maths, and Biology is needed only for medical-side and some other courses. A separate Kannada test applies only to some Horanadu/Gadinadu candidates. Because the engineering rank counts 2nd PUC/Class 12 PCM marks equally with the KCET score, board marks matter here more than in the other two exams.

JEE Main: Conducted by NTA in two sessions (January and April), and your better score counts. It is the only route of the three to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA, and the top 2.5 lakh qualifiers become eligible for JEE Advanced.

COMEDK UGET: Conducted by the COMEDK consortium of Karnataka private colleges once a year, open to students from any state. It fills the COMEDK share of seats in member colleges; the remaining seats go through KCET and management quota.

Strategy by Profile: Karnataka-eligible, strong PCM: write all three. Karnataka-eligible, moderate PCM: KCET + COMEDK. Not Karnataka-eligible: JEE Main + COMEDK. Targeting IIT/NIT: prioritise JEE Main + JEE Advanced. Budget constraint: maximise KCET, which has the lowest fees.

Common Mistakes: Skipping KCET when you are Karnataka-eligible; ignoring board marks, which count for half your KCET engineering rank; over-investing in JEE Main when KCET is realistic; skipping COMEDK if you are writing JEE Main.

How the 2026 calendar ran:

  1. Jan 2026 JEE Main session 1 held; KCET applications opened (KEA bulletin hosted 17 January)
  2. Feb–Mar 2026 JEE Main session 1 results (February); COMEDK UGET registration (February to mid-March)
  3. Apr 2026 JEE Main session 2; KCET held on 23–24 April
  4. May 2026 COMEDK UGET held on 9 May; JEE Advanced held in May
  5. Jun–Sep 2026 JoSAA from early June; KCET results on 6 June, with KEA engineering counselling running from 20 June to the Round 3 allotment in September; COMEDK counselling ran alongside
  6. 2027 cycle Expected to follow a similar pattern: JEE Main registration typically opens in October–November, and KCET and COMEDK applications typically open in January–February. Check the official notifications.

FAQs

Is COMEDK harder than KCET?
Both are based on the PUC/Class 12 PCM syllabus, and neither has negative marking, so most students find them easier than JEE Main. COMEDK puts Physics, Chemistry and Maths in one 3-hour paper. KCET has separate 60-mark papers per subject, and your KCET engineering rank also counts your 2nd PUC/Class 12 PCM marks equally.
Can a non-Karnataka student get into RVCE through KCET?
Usually not through KCET. Anyone can write KCET, but government-quota seats through KEA need a Karnataka eligibility clause, most commonly seven years of study in Karnataka. A student without one can apply to RVCE through COMEDK UGET or the management quota.
Should I take all three exams in 2026?
For Karnataka-eligible students with strong PCM, writing all three is sensible: the application fees add up to only a few thousand rupees, and each exam opens a different set of seats. Plan your 2027 calendar so the exams do not crowd your board preparation.
