COMEDK Counselling 2026 — Round 1 Strategy and Common Mistakes

·

COMEDK 2026 counselling is conducted by the COMEDK consortium for approximately 150 private engineering colleges in Karnataka after the COMEDK UGET exam in May 2026.

Counselling Schedule (Tentative) - COMEDK results released: Mid-June 2026 - Counselling registration: Late June 2026 (~7 days) - Document verification: Last week of June 2026 - Round 1 choice filling: First week of July 2026 - Round 1 seat allotment: Mid July 2026 - Round 1 acceptance and reporting: Within 7 days of allotment - Round 2 (slide up + vacant): Late July to early August 2026 - Round 3 / Mop-up: Mid August 2026 if seats remain

Round 1 Strategy The first round is the most important. With your COMEDK rank, list ALL colleges + branches you'd accept. Software gives you the highest-priority eligible choice.

Strategy 1: Lock vs Float After Round 1 allotment, you can either (a) accept (lock and pay), (b) float (wait for Round 2 with same seat reserved, hoping for better in Round 2), or (c) reject and re-enter Round 2 fresh.

Lock if: Your rank just barely qualified for the seat — you'd lose it if it floats. Float if: Your rank is comfortable for the seat AND you have a clear "better" target in Round 2. Reject if: You're unhappy with the allotment and confident your rank can secure something better in Round 2.

Strategy 2: Choice Order Order choices by your actual preference — branch + college + city + budget. Don't game the algorithm. The software respects your priority order.

Tip: Mix in 2-3 "stretch" choices at the top (branches/colleges where your rank may not be enough), then 5-10 "realistic" choices, then 5-10 "safe" choices. This way the software finds your best feasible match without wasting your high-rank value on a sub-optimal seat.

Common Mistakes to Avoid 1. Not listing enough choices — fill 50+ if your rank gives you that many options. The software won't allot anything you didn't list. 2. Locking in Round 1 prematurely — if your rank can pull a better branch in Round 2, you'll regret a hasty Round 1 lock. 3. Skipping document verification — if your name doesn't appear on the verified list, you're excluded from allotment regardless of rank. 4. Paying tuition fees outside the COMEDK portal — Round 1 acceptance fee MUST be paid through the official COMEDK portal. Beware of agents asking for bank transfers or DD outside the portal. 5. Not converting COMEDK seat to college reporting on time — once allotted and acceptance fee paid, you have ~10 days to physically report to the college. Missing this = forfeit + no refund.

Top COMEDK Colleges by Branch For CSE seats: - RVCE: ~rank 1,500 - BMS College: ~rank 2,500 - MSRIT: ~rank 5,000 - PES University: ~rank 4,500 - DSCE/RNSIT/RV University: ~rank 8,000-15,000

These are 2024 reference ranks; 2026 cutoffs may shift.

Tip If you don't get the branch + college you want in Round 1, DON'T panic. Round 2 typically has 30-40% of seats vacant at top private colleges (because top scorers leave for IIT/NIT). Many candidates who didn't get RVCE or BMS in Round 1 secure them in Round 2.
