NIE was founded in 1946 by Sri S. Ramaswamy, Sri D. V. Narasimha Rao and Sri T. Rama Rao with 13 supporters, making it the second engineering college in Karnataka and the first in Mysuru. It is run by the NIE Society (NIE Managing Committee) and has been a grant-in-aid institution since 1957.
