JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Advanced 2026 is the final gateway to India's 23 IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) for B.Tech admission. Conducted by IIT Kanpur in 2026 (different IIT each year), the exam is among the toughest engineering entrance tests globally.
Eligibility — Two Filters Filter 1: Top 2,50,000 candidates from JEE Main 2026 qualify to register for JEE Advanced. Filter 2: Must have appeared in 12th board exam in 2025 or 2026 (with minimum 75% aggregate in PCM, or top 20 percentile in respective board).
Maximum 2 attempts allowed in consecutive years. A candidate who joined an IIT B.Tech earlier (even briefly) is not eligible to re-attempt.
Exam Pattern - Two papers: Paper 1 (3 hours) + Paper 2 (3 hours), held same day - Both papers mandatory - Computer-based test (CBT) - Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics - Question types vary year to year: MCQ, multiple-correct, integer answer, paragraph-based - Negative marking applies — typically -1 or -2 for wrong answers - Scheduled for May 18, 2026 (subject to JEE Advanced 2026 official notification)
Result and Cutoff Results expected June 2026. Cutoff scores vary year to year — typically 35-40% in each subject and 30% overall is required to be in the rank list. Top 30,000 ranks become eligible for IIT counselling (called JoSAA).
JoSAA Counselling JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts centralised counselling for all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Six rounds of allocation, with progressive seat fill-up. Candidates lock branch + college choices, software does optimal allotment. Registration mid-June, allotment rounds June-July.
IIT Branch Cutoffs 2025 (Reference) - IIT Bombay CSE: ~75 (general); IIT Delhi CSE: ~110; IIT Madras CSE: ~120; IIT Kanpur CSE: ~210; IIT Kharagpur CSE: ~280 - Newer IITs (Bhilai, Goa, Dharwad, Jammu, Palakkad, Tirupati) have CSE cutoffs around rank 2,500-5,000 - Mechanical and Civil cutoffs are 5x-10x higher (less competitive than CSE)
Fees and Aid IIT B.Tech tuition: ~₹2.25L per year (~₹9L for 4 years). Hostel + mess: ~₹1.5-2L per year. Total 4-year cost: ~₹15-17L. SC/ST/PWD students study free. Need-based scholarships available for general category families with annual income under ₹5L.
What If You Don't Crack JEE Advanced Backup plans: NIT/IIIT seats via JoSAA (JEE Main rank used), state engineering colleges (KCET/COMEDK), BITSAT for BITS Pilani, private universities (VIT, SRM, Manipal, Thapar) via own exams or JEE Main scores.
Strategy Tip JEE Advanced rewards conceptual depth and multi-step problem solving over memorisation. Two months of focused practice on past 10 years of JEE Advanced papers (with timed mocks) is more valuable than additional theory revision in the final month.
