The Eligibility Gate: JEE Main is open to all 12th-passing PCM students with 75% aggregate. ~12-14 lakh candidates appear annually. JEE Advanced is restricted to top 2.5 lakh JEE Main rankers. ~2-3% of the JEE Main pool qualifies.
Question Pattern Differences: JEE Main — 90 questions across PCM (30 each), 3 hours, mostly single-correct + numerical. Negative marking -1. JEE Advanced — Two papers (P1+P2), each ~3 hours both mandatory. Mixed types: single-correct, multiple-correct, integer-type, paragraph-based, matching-type.
Conceptual Depth: JEE Main tests conceptual application — given X, apply Y formula. Solvable in 1-3 minutes. JEE Advanced tests conceptual depth + multi-step problem-solving: combining 2-3 different topics; multiple-correct requiring evaluating each option; paragraph problems taking 8-10 minutes.
Time Pressure: JEE Main — 90 questions in 3 hours = 2 minutes/question. JEE Advanced — ~36-72 questions in 3 hours per paper × 2 papers. Most candidates leave 30-40% of questions unattempted.
Cutoff Reality: JEE Main ~88-90 percentile qualifies for JEE Advanced (top 2.5L). NIT/IIIT through JoSAA: ~95-98 percentile. Top 30,000 ranks become eligible for JoSAA IIT.
Preparation Strategy: For JEE Main alone — focus on fundamentals + formulas, 100+ practice problems per topic, mock tests, coverage breadth. For JEE Advanced — conceptual depth in 4-5 strongest topics, multi-step problem solving, multiple-correct practice, past 5 years'' papers timed.
