Exam pattern differences
JEE Main 2026: Computer-based test, 90 questions across Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics — 30 each. 3 hours. Marking: +4 correct, -1 wrong. Conducted by NTA in two sessions (January and April).
BITSAT 2026: Computer-based test, 130 questions across Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics — 30 each — plus English (15) and Logical Reasoning (10) — plus 12 bonus questions. 3 hours. Marking: +3 correct, -1 wrong. Conducted by BITS in two sessions (May/June).
Key difference: BITSAT includes English and Logical Reasoning sections that JEE Main doesn't. JEE Main is purely PCM. BITSAT also has a "no-time-pressure bonus question" mechanism for fast finishers.
What each exam unlocks
JEE Main: All 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, 33 GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes), DTU, NSUT, IIIT Hyderabad (separate), most state engineering colleges. ~14 lakh test-takers per session.
BITSAT: Only BITS Pilani campuses (Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad). ~3 lakh test-takers per session.
Cutoff / qualifying criteria
JEE Main: Top 2.5 lakh rankers qualify for JEE Advanced (which then unlocks IITs). Direct admissions to NITs/IIITs/GFTIs are based on JEE Main rank via JoSAA counselling.
BITSAT: Direct admission. Cutoff scores out of 390 — top branches at BITS Pilani (CSE, ECE) typically need 350+. BITS Goa CSE around 320+. BITS Hyderabad CSE around 310+.
Difficulty comparison
JEE Main is harder in PCM depth (especially Mathematics — known for being trickier than BITSAT Math). BITSAT is easier in PCM but adds English and Logical Reasoning that some students find time-consuming. For a strong PCM candidate, BITSAT is the easier exam to top.
Which to target?
Target both if you can. They share ~70% of preparation overlap.
Target only JEE Main if your primary goal is IIT/NIT/IIIT, your English/Reasoning is weak, or you can't add another preparation track.
Target only BITSAT if your primary goal is BITS Pilani specifically, you have strong English + Reasoning skills, and you want the BITS curriculum flexibility (branch change after 1st year, dual-degree options, Practice School internship).
