The institute was formally established on 18 June 1964, when the Government of India, through the UGC, declared BITS an Institution Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 — amalgamating the Birla Colleges of Science, Engineering and Pharmacy founded under the Birla Education Trust.
