IIT Indore (established 2009) and IIT Patna (established 2008) are both second-generation IITs from the 2008 IIT expansion. IIT Indore in MP on 525-acre Simrol campus; IIT Patna in Bihar on 500-acre Bihta campus.
Academics
IIT Indore offers 11+ disciplines including unique Astronomy and Astrophysics programme. IIT Patna offers 8+ disciplines focused on traditional engineering.
Both colleges offer 4-year B.Tech programmes across CSE, ECE, EE, ME, and Civil with branch-specific specialisations. IIT Indore is Government (Central-government autonomous Institute of National Importance) with NAAC Institute of National Importance accreditation. IIT Patna is Government with NAAC Institute of National Importance accreditation. Both follow AICTE-approved curriculum with industry-aligned electives, project-based learning, and credit-transfer options. CSE remains the most competitive branch at both, with ECE/IT close behind. Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical have lower cutoffs but solid placements at the better institution of the two.
Campus Life
IIT Indore Simrol campus has moderate weather and proximity to Indore city. IIT Patna Bihta campus has hot summer + cold winter and is ~35 km from Patna city. Both have modern second-generation IIT infrastructure.
Verdict
IIT Indore is the better choice for students interested in Astronomy/Astrophysics or AI-ML/Materials Science research. IIT Patna for Bihar/Eastern India domicile or traditional engineering focus.
