IIT Delhi FAQs

When was IIT Delhi established and what is its statutory status?
IIT Delhi was established in 1961 and formally inaugurated in August 1961 as one of the first five Indian Institutes of Technology, having evolved from the original College of Engineering and Technology, Delhi. It is an Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 (Act No. 59 of 1961, gazetted 20 December 1961 and effective 1 April 1962), which empowers it to confer its own degrees and diplomas.
Where is IIT Delhi located and how big is the campus?
IIT Delhi is located at Hauz Khas, New Delhi 110016, on a 325-acre lush-green campus in the heart of South Delhi — adjacent to the IIT Delhi metro station on the Delhi Metro Magenta Line and close to Qutub Minar and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Who is the current Director of IIT Delhi?
The current Director of IIT Delhi is Prof. Rangan Banerjee — a distinguished energy-systems researcher and IITB alumnus — who took charge on 15 February 2022 for a standard five-year term. Under his leadership IIT Delhi has expanded sustainability research, international partnerships and set up the IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi (IITD-AD) off-shore campus.
How is IIT Delhi ranked nationally and internationally?
In NIRF 2025 IIT Delhi holds Rank 2 in Engineering, Rank 3 in Research Institutions, Rank 4 in Overall and Management, Rank 7 in Innovation and Rank 8 in SDG Institutions. In the QS World University Rankings 2026 it is ranked 123 globally and was announced by QS as the No. 1 Educational Institution in India for that cycle, with QS Subject 2026 placing it at #36 in Engineering & Technology and #45 in Computer Science.
What undergraduate and postgraduate programmes does IIT Delhi offer?
IIT Delhi offers B.Tech in 15 specialisations including CSE (~99 seats), Mathematics & Computing, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Textile Engineering and Fibre Technology and Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology. Dual-degree B.Tech + M.Tech programmes, M.Tech, M.Sc., M.Des, M.S. (Research) and Ph.D. programmes run across 15+ departments and 10+ centres. The Department of Management Studies (DMS) offers the flagship full-time MBA and Executive MBA.
How does B.Tech admission work at IIT Delhi?
B.Tech and integrated B.Tech + M.Tech admissions are through JEE Advanced (after qualifying JEE Main), followed by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. Eligibility requires a 10+2 pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, the category-specific aggregate benchmark and a JEE Advanced rank within IIT Delhi's cut-off for the chosen branch and category. Foreign nationals can apply through CSAB-Supernumerary or CSAB-Foreign Nationals rounds.
How are M.Tech, M.Sc., M.Des, MBA and Ph.D. admissions done at IIT Delhi?
M.Tech and M.Tech+Ph.D. dual-degree admissions are through valid GATE scores plus departmental shortlisting/interviews. M.Sc. admissions are through JAM and M.Des. admissions through CEED. MBA and Executive MBA admissions at the Department of Management Studies (DMS) are through valid CAT scores followed by group discussion and personal interview.
