IIT Delhi runs an extensive on-campus hostel system on its 320-acre Hauz Khas campus — 13 men's hostels (Aravali, Girnar, Jwalamukhi, Karakoram, Kumaon, Nilgiri, Satpura, Shivalik, Vindhyachal, Zanskar and others) and 4 women's hostels (Himadri, Kailash, Kara and Udaigiri). First-year B.Tech students typically get double-occupancy rooms with single rooms from the second year. Annual hostel and mess fees for 2025-26 are heavily subsidised — typically ₹40,000-65,000 per academic year inclusive of mess.

IIT Delhi runs comprehensive financial aid. SC/ST students receive full tuition waivers plus Central Government Post-matric Scholarship covering hostel and mess. Students from families with annual income below ₹1 lakh receive 100% tuition remission; those between ₹1-5 lakh receive 67% remission. Defence wards qualify for PM Scholarship Scheme. Merit-cum-Means scholarship covers ₹1,000 per month plus tuition for top 25% of low-income students. AICTE Pragati for girl students and AICTE Saksham for differently-abled students are accepted.

IIT Delhi was established in 1961 and formally inaugurated in August 1961 as one of the first five Indian Institutes of Technology, having evolved from the original College of Engineering and Technology, Delhi. It is an Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 (Act No. 59 of 1961, gazetted 20 December 1961 and effective 1 April 1962), which empowers it to confer its own degrees and diplomas.
