IIT (BHU) Varanasi was upgraded to a fully-fledged Indian Institute of Technology on 29 June 2012 by an Act of Parliament amending the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. However, engineering education on this campus dates back to 1919 when the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) was founded at Banaras Hindu University; BENCO and the Mining and Metallurgical Engineering College were later merged into the Institute of Technology, BHU (IT-BHU) in 1971, which was then converted to IIT status in 2012 — giving the institute more than a century of continuous engineering education heritage.

IIT (BHU) Varanasi is located inside the 1,300-acre Banaras Hindu University main campus at Varanasi 221005, Uttar Pradesh, on the southern fringe of Varanasi city and on the bank of the Ganga. The BHU campus is one of the oldest and largest residential university campuses in Asia, founded in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, so IIT (BHU) students live inside a heritage campus that blends modern IIT infrastructure with the wider Banaras Hindu University ecosystem including the Institute of Medical Sciences, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science.

In NIRF 2025, IIT (BHU) Varanasi is ranked number 31 in the Overall category, number 10 in the Engineering category and number 22 in the Research Institutions category. Within the IIT system it sits among the top-tier IITs after the older second-generation IITs, and in the Engineering sub-ranking it is consistently a top-10 institution in India, comparable in standing with IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore and IIT Guwahati in the same rank band.

B.Tech admission at IIT (BHU) Varanasi is entirely through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced route. Candidates must first clear JEE Main and qualify for JEE Advanced; the final seat allocation is done centrally through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling, which allocates seats across all IITs including IIT (BHU) in the common pool. IIT (BHU) does not accept any other entrance test for its regular four-year B.Tech programmes, nor does it maintain a management-quota or direct-admission route.

IIT (BHU) Varanasi offers M.Tech in most engineering disciplines (admission through GATE), M.Pharm in pharmaceutical sciences (admission through GPAT), integrated dual-degree IDD (B.Tech + M.Tech / Integrated Master of Technology), M.Sc. in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics via the IIT-JAM examination, and a full Ph.D. programme across every engineering and science department. The institute also runs research programmes through its four interdisciplinary schools in Biomedical, Biochemical and Materials Science and Technology.

IIT (BHU) Varanasi is headed by Director Prof. Amit Patra, an electrical-engineering professor and academic leader who obtained his Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur and served for several years as Deputy Director of IIT Kharagpur before taking charge at IIT (BHU). He has also held additional charge as Director of IIT Kharagpur during recent transitions. His specialisation is in control systems and power electronics, and under his leadership IIT (BHU) continues to expand its research output, interdisciplinary schools and industry linkages.

During the 2025-26 placement season, IIT (BHU) Varanasi recorded 1,005 placements with the highest domestic package touching Rs 1.67 crore per annum and the overall average package standing at approximately Rs 29.33 lakh per annum. In addition, 280 Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) were rolled out to students based on their summer internships, and the institute secured 443 internship offers during the season. Core recruiters span software and product engineering, analytics, finance, FMCG, core engineering and public-sector undertakings, with strong traction from IT services, investment banks and research labs.

IIT (BHU) Varanasi is the only IIT located inside an older and larger host university campus — the 1,300-acre Banaras Hindu University. This gives students access to a much wider academic and cultural ecosystem than any other IIT, including the BHU Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Institute of Medical Sciences and a host of research centres under BHU.
