FAQ

NIT Sikkim FAQs

What is the B.Tech fee at NIT Sikkim for 2026-27?
NIT Sikkim is a centrally-funded Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education, with B.Tech tuition fees in the range of approximately Rs 1.6-1.8 lakh per academic year (subject to standard revisions and Government-of-India tuition-fee waivers for eligible categories). Hostel fees, mess fees and other charges are billed separately. Final fee notifications for 2026-27 are released on the official NIT Sikkim website (nitsikkim.ac.in) and through the JoSAA counselling portal.
Is the B.Tech fee at NIT Sikkim lower than at private engineering colleges?
Yes. As a centrally-funded NIT and Institute of National Importance, NIT Sikkim charges substantially lower B.Tech tuition fees than private engineering colleges and private deemed universities, where annual fees typically range from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4+ lakh per year. The Government-subsidised NIT fee structure makes NIT Sikkim one of the most affordable high-quality B.Tech destinations in north-east India.
Are scholarships and fee waivers available at NIT Sikkim?
Yes. NIT Sikkim students can access the MoE Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships, the SC/ST/OBC post-matric scholarship schemes, the AICTE Pragati and Saksham scholarships for women and differently-abled students, the Sikkim state government scholarship schemes for Sikkim-domicile candidates, and various private trust and alumni scholarships. The institute also offers tuition-fee waivers under the standard NIT fee-remission framework for eligible economically-weaker-section candidates.
How do I apply for B.Tech admission at NIT Sikkim?
B.Tech admission to NIT Sikkim is conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) centralised counselling. Candidates must appear for JEE Main, register on the JoSAA portal (josaa.nic.in), complete online choice-filling listing NIT Sikkim and the desired B.Tech programme, receive provisional seat allotment based on JEE Main rank and the home-state/other-state quota, complete online document upload and verification, and report at NIT Sikkim on the designated admission date. The standard NIT 50-50 home-state (Sikkim) and other-state quota applies.
What is the eligibility for B.Tech admission at NIT Sikkim?
Candidates must have completed Class 12 (Higher Secondary) or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects, securing at least 75 percent aggregate marks (65 percent for SC/ST/PwD) or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective Class 12 board, in line with the standard MoE NIT eligibility framework. Candidates must qualify the JEE Main examination conducted by the National Testing Agency, with All-India Common Rank determining JoSAA seat allocation.
When was NIT Sikkim established?
NIT Sikkim was established in 2010 as one of the ten new-generation NITs created by the Government of India to expand NIT capacity and strengthen technical education in the under-served regions of the country, with a particular focus on the North-East. It was formally accorded Institute of National Importance status through the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Amendment) Act, 2012, which brought all 2009-2010 cohort NITs under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.
What is the affiliation and accreditation of NIT Sikkim?
NIT Sikkim is an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (as amended by the 2012 Amendment Act), directly funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The institute is autonomous and awards its own degrees with no external university affiliation. NIT Sikkim is NBA-accredited across multiple B.Tech programmes and is consistently working towards NAAC accreditation as it matures.
What B.Tech programmes does NIT Sikkim offer?
NIT Sikkim offers a focused B.Tech programme suite covering Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. Postgraduate programmes include M.Tech across departments and PhD research programmes.
