IIT Palakkad — Fees, Placements & Admission 2026

IIT Palakkad charges the Ministry of Education standard IIT tuition of approximately Rs 1,00,000 per semester (Rs 2,00,000 per academic year) for B.Tech programmes in the General, OBC-NCL and EWS categories. This figure is reviewed by the IIT Council and may be revised by an MoE notification before each academic year. SC, ST and PwD candidates receive a full tuition waiver. Students whose annual family income is below Rs 1 lakh receive a full tuition waiver, and those with family income between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh receive a two-thirds tuition waiver under the central IIT remission scheme.

In addition to tuition, students pay hostel and mess charges of approximately Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000 per academic year covering accommodation in the on-campus residential complex, mess dining, electricity, water and maintenance. One-time admission fees including institute deposit, identity card and registration add approximately Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 in the first semester. Medical insurance, student activity fee, examination fee and laboratory-consumables contribute a smaller recurring component. Books, stationery and personal expenses typically add Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per year. Total first-year cost of attendance usually sits in the Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.0 lakh range for General-category students.

IIT Palakkad offers the full central IIT fee-remission scheme: SC, ST and PwD candidates receive a full tuition waiver; General, OBC-NCL and EWS students with family income below Rs 1 lakh receive a full tuition waiver; and those with family income between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh receive a two-thirds tuition waiver. Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarships, Institute Merit scholarships, and external scholarships from the National Scholarship Portal, state governments and CSR partners further support eligible students. PhD scholars receive MoE-standard monthly fellowships; M.Tech students sponsored via GATE receive MHRD assistantships.

B.Tech admission at IIT Palakkad is exclusively through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced score and the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. Candidates must first qualify JEE Main, rank within the top approximately 2.5 lakh of the common merit list to be eligible for JEE Advanced, and then clear JEE Advanced with the category-wise cut-off set by the organising IIT. Admission is then allocated through JoSAA counselling on the basis of JEE Advanced All India Rank, branch preference, category and seat matrix. There is no separate institute-level application; JoSAA seat acceptance and document verification complete the admission process.

Candidates must have passed Class XII (or an equivalent qualifying examination) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. They must have secured either a minimum aggregate of 75% in Class XII (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or be placed within the top 20 percentile of their respective Class XII board. Candidates must qualify JEE Main, then clear JEE Advanced with the applicable category cut-off score. Age and number-of-attempt restrictions set by the JEE Advanced brochure apply. Final admission is subject to JoSAA seat allotment and verification of all academic and category certificates at the institute.

IIT Palakkad is an Institute of National Importance, established in 2015 as one of the six second-generation IITs announced by the Government of India, and formally added to the Second Schedule of the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 through the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2016. Academic operations began in August 2015 from a temporary transit campus at the Ahalia Integrated Campus, Kozhippara, with IIT Madras as the mentor institute. The permanent campus at Kanjikode (Pudussery West), Palakkad is being developed in phases and is now largely operational. IIT Palakkad is funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

IIT Palakkad is located at Kanjikode (Pudussery West), Palakkad District, Kerala 678623, approximately 14 km from Palakkad town along NH-544 in the foothills of the Western Ghats, adjacent to the Kanjikode industrial hub on the Coimbatore-Kochi industrial corridor. The permanent residential campus spans approximately 500 acres and is one of the greenest new-generation IIT campuses given its Western Ghats setting. The campus houses academic blocks, extensive research laboratories, the central library, student hostels, faculty and staff residences, a sports complex, medical centre and the IPTIF technology business incubator. Palakkad is well-connected by rail (Palakkad Junction), road (NH-544) and air (Coimbatore airport, 55 km).

IIT Palakkad offers B.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Data Science and Engineering. M.Tech streams include Computer Science, Signal Processing and Communication, Systems and Control, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering. M.Sc programmes in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Data Science, an MS (Research) track, MBA programme and PhD research across departments round out the academic portfolio. The institute has a particularly strong focus on interdisciplinary research, data science, sustainability engineering and applied engineering sciences.
