Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi is an autonomous Institute of National Importance established in 2009 as one of the eight new IITs announced by the Government of India and subsequently added to the Second Schedule of the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 through the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. IIT Mandi began academic operations in July 2009 from a temporary transit campus at the Vallabh Government College, Mandi, with IIT Roorkee serving as the mentor institute during the set-up phase.

First-year B.Tech students typically get double-occupancy rooms with single rooms from the second year by seniority. Annual hostel and mess fees for 2025-26 are heavily subsidised — typically ₹40,000-65,000 per academic year inclusive of mess. Mess service includes vegetarian, non-vegetarian and Jain options across multiple mess centres with student-elected mess secretaries; menus combine North Indian, Himachali and limited South Indian and Continental rotations.
