IIT Bhubaneswar — Fees, Placements & Admission 2025

IIT Bhubaneswar follows the standard IIT fee structure set by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. For the 2026-27 academic session, B.Tech tuition is approximately Rs 2 lakh per year (split into two semester payments), with additional charges for hostel room rent, mess advance, medical fee, examination fee, and gymkhana subscription pushing the total to approximately Rs 2.5-3 lakh per year for general-category students. SC/ST/PwD students receive a 100% tuition fee waiver under MoE guidelines. Students from families with annual income below Rs 1 lakh receive full tuition remission, and families with income between Rs 1-5 lakh receive a two-thirds tuition waiver. Hostel and mess charges at IIT Bhubaneswar follow the IIT-wide cost-recovery model. Combined hostel room rent, mess advance, electricity and water charges, and hostel cultural fee typically total approximately Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000 per year. The permanent campus at Argul, Jatani has separate hostels for boys and girls with double-occupancy and triple-occupancy rooms, Wi-Fi, common rooms, and in-house recreation and dining. Mess operations run on a cost-recovery basis with students paying actual food cost, typically Rs 3,000-4,500 per month. A refundable caution deposit is collected at admission. IIT Bhubaneswar offers multiple scholarship streams following the standard IIT framework. SC/ST/PwD students receive a full 100% tuition fee waiver and additionally qualify for MoE Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarships. General, OBC, and EWS students from families with annual income under Rs 1 lakh receive a complete tuition waiver, and those with family income Rs 1-5 lakh receive a two-thirds tuition waiver. Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (MCM) is available for academically strong students from economically weaker backgrounds. National Talent Scholarship, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY, legacy rollover), Inspire-SHE, and institute-administered merit scholarships also apply. Postgraduate students are eligible for MHRD / GATE fellowships where applicable.

B.Tech admission at IIT Bhubaneswar is conducted exclusively through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling using JEE Advanced ranks — the single centralised pathway for all 23 IITs. The process has three stages: first, qualify JEE Main (NTA) in the January or April session; second, clear the JEE Main cutoff to become eligible for JEE Advanced (organising IIT announced annually); third, register on josaa.nic.in with the JEE Advanced roll number, submit branch and institute preferences for IIT Bhubaneswar, and participate in the six JoSAA allocation rounds. The Common Seat Allocation System (CSAB) handles vacant seats after JoSAA. Upon seat allocation, candidates report physically at IIT Bhubaneswar with required documents for verification and fee payment.

Eligibility for B.Tech admission at IIT Bhubaneswar follows the standard JEE Advanced / JoSAA framework. Candidates must have passed class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. General, OBC, and EWS candidates need 75% aggregate in class 12 (or rank in the top 20 percentile of their board examination), while SC, ST, and PwD candidates need 65% aggregate (or top 20 percentile). Candidates must qualify JEE Main in the current year, then appear for JEE Advanced, and must feature in the JEE Advanced All India Common Rank List (or category-specific list) to be eligible for JoSAA counselling. Age limits and the maximum number of attempts for JEE Advanced also apply per JAB rules.

IIT Bhubaneswar is an Institute of National Importance established in 2008 as one of the eight new IITs and formally added to the Second Schedule of the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 through the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 — alongside IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Mandi, IIT Patna, and IIT Ropar. As an Institute of National Importance, IIT Bhubaneswar enjoys statutory parity with older IITs, reports directly to the Ministry of Education, Government of India, is funded through the consolidated IIT grant, and operates under its own Board of Governors. The President of India serves as the Visitor of all IITs. IIT Bhubaneswar confers its own degrees and is governed by the IIT Act rather than UGC as applied to state or deemed universities.

IIT Bhubaneswar initially operated from a temporary campus at the IIT Kharagpur Extension Centre in Bhubaneswar, with IIT Kharagpur serving as the mentor institute during the set-up phase from 2008 onwards. The permanent campus is located at Argul, Jatani, Khordha District, Odisha 752050, approximately 25 km from central Bhubaneswar, well-connected by road and rail. The permanent campus spans approximately 936 acres of green, residential academic infrastructure — one of the larger new-generation IIT campuses — with multiple academic blocks, research laboratories, student hostels, faculty residences, central library, and sports complex commissioned. Operations progressively shifted from the temporary IIT Kharagpur Extension Centre to the permanent Argul campus from 2015 onwards.

IIT Bhubaneswar offers B.Tech programmes through its distinctive school-based academic structure. The School of Electrical Sciences delivers Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electrical Engineering (EE), and Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC). The School of Mechanical Sciences delivers Mechanical Engineering. The School of Infrastructure delivers Civil Engineering. The School of Minerals, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering delivers Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The School of Basic Sciences delivers Engineering Physics. Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering round out the programme suite. Dual-degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) programmes are available for high-performing students. The School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences and School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management host PG and PhD programmes.
