BITM was established in 1997 at Ballari (formerly Bellary) in north-east Karnataka. The founder was the late Smt. Basavarajeswari, a former Minister of State in the Central Government and the Founder-Chairperson of the Tungabhadra Education Health & Rural Development (TEHRD) Trust, which runs the college as its flagship institution. The present Chairman and Founder-Director is Dr. Yashvanth Bhupal, who holds B.E., M.S. and Ph.D. qualifications and has been responsible for much of the institute's growth.

The Tungabhadra Education Health & Rural Development (TEHRD) Trust, established by Smt. Basavarajeswari, operates BITM as its flagship higher-education institution along with a network of feeder institutions that collectively form a school-through-doctorate pathway under a single group: Sanjay Gandhi Polytechnic, Bellary Private Industrial Training Institute, Basavarajeswari Public School & College, BPSC Pre-University College and Ballari Business College. This vertical ecosystem gives BITM students continuity options across diploma, UG, PG and doctoral study.

Yes. BITM was granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission and Visvesvaraya Technological University from the academic year 2021-22, while retaining VTU degree-awarding affiliation. Autonomy allows the institute to design its own syllabi, conduct its own examinations and announce its own results on its own timelines within the VTU framework — which in practice means faster curricular refresh for emerging areas like AI, data science and cybersecurity and tighter integration between classroom teaching and live industry projects.

The college is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, recognised by the University Grants Commission and the Government of Karnataka, and affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, for degree-awarding purposes.

BITM offers a full four-stream academic portfolio: Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) at the undergraduate level across core and emerging disciplines (CSE, ISE, ECE, EEE, Mechanical, Civil and modern streams including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Science); Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the postgraduate level; and Ph.D. programmes under VTU Research Centre status. The autonomy framework allows the institution to add or refresh specialisations faster than non-autonomous VTU colleges.

The Jnana Gangothri Campus is on the Bellary-Hospet Road at Near Allipura, Ballari, Karnataka 583104. Ballari is the district headquarters of Ballari District in north-east Karnataka and is well-connected by rail and road to Hospet, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and the wider Bengaluru-Hyderabad corridor, with Ballari Airport providing regional air access. The surrounding region is one of India's most significant iron-ore mining and steel-making belts, giving BITM a distinctive industrial ecosystem around its campus.

Karnataka-domicile candidates apply through the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). National-pool candidates use the COMEDK UGET administered by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka. JEE Main scores are also accepted through the supplementary counselling process. Eligibility is 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Computer Science or Electronics, with minimum 45% aggregate (40% for SC/ST/OBC). Lateral-entry candidates use the Karnataka Diploma CET.

For MCA, admission is through Karnataka PGCET conducted by KEA. For MBA, admission is through PGCET, KMAT, CAT or MAT score-based counselling, with valid scorecards in any of these tests qualifying candidates for BITM's MBA counselling. For Ph.D. programmes, VTU Research Centre admission norms apply, including VTU entrance examinations and research proposal evaluation; candidates need a recognised master's degree in a relevant discipline with the prescribed minimum aggregate percentage specified by VTU.
