Bracket 1: Below INR 10 lakh (4-year all-in cost)
Indicatively, four years of engineering costs under INR 10 lakh at a state government college or an IIT/NIT with fee remission, INR 10-20 lakh at IITs, NITs and many IIITs without remission, INR 20-30 lakh at top private and deemed universities, and INR 30-50 lakh or more for NRI and foreign-national seats. Quota and hostel move the number as much as the college does.
State Government Colleges + IIT/NIT with fee remission. At state government colleges on state quota, tuition is usually low (often well under INR 1 lakh a year); with hostel, mess and other costs the four-year total is commonly INR 4-10 lakh, and less if the student lives at home. Examples: COEP Pune, JNTU Hyderabad, UVCE Bangalore, Anna University, Jadavpur University. At IITs and NITs, SC, ST and PwD students get a full tuition waiver, and General, EWS and OBC-NCL students from families earning under INR 1 lakh get full remission (two-thirds off between INR 1 lakh and INR 5 lakh). With a full waiver, the four-year cost falls to roughly INR 4-6 lakh, mainly hostel, mess and other fees.
Bracket 2: INR 10-16 lakh — IITs, NITs, top IIITs (general candidates) Students from families above the remission limits pay full tuition. IIT tuition is about INR 1 lakh a semester, so the 4-year all-in cost is roughly INR 12-16 lakh. NIT tuition is INR 62,500 a semester, so the 4-year all-in is roughly INR 9-13 lakh; the home-state quota at NITs changes the cutoff, not the fee. IIITs, including PPP IIITs (Sri City, Vadodara, Bhopal, Una) and central IIITs such as IIIT Allahabad: roughly INR 12-20 lakh depending on the institute. NITs are typically cheaper than IITs mainly because of lower tuition.
Bracket 3: INR 16-22 lakh Private and deemed universities with strong placement records: IIIT Hyderabad (INR 18-22 lakh), Nirma University (INR 18-22 lakh), Thapar Patiala (INR 18-22 lakh). (VNIT Nagpur is an NIT, so it follows the NIT fee pattern in Bracket 2.)
Bracket 4: INR 22-28 lakh — Top private universities, deemed-universities MIT WPU Pune (INR 22-28 lakh), VIT Vellore (INR 22-25 lakh), SRM Chennai (INR 22-26 lakh), VIT Bhopal (INR 18-22 lakh), Symbiosis Institute of Technology Pune (INR 22-26 lakh), PES University Bangalore (INR 22-26 lakh). DTU Delhi, a state government university, is cheaper at roughly INR 16-20 lakh.
Bracket 5: INR 28-36 lakh — Premium tier-1 deemed-universities, NRI quotas BITS Pilani / Hyderabad / Goa (tuition INR 2.91 lakh a semester in 2026-27, so roughly INR 28-32 lakh all-in), VIT Vellore for NRI students (INR 30-35 lakh), Manipal Institute of Technology (INR 22-28 lakh), SRM Kattankulathur for management quota (INR 28-32 lakh), Mahindra University (INR 28-32 lakh), KL University (INR 18-22 lakh — middle bracket but referenced for AP/TG markets), Lovely Professional University (INR 22-26 lakh), Chandigarh University (INR 22-26 lakh), Amity University Noida (INR 22-26 lakh).
Bracket 6: Above INR 36 lakh — Foreign nationals, premium NRI quotas BITS Pilani for international students (fees charged in US dollars): INR 40+ lakh. VIT Vellore for foreign students: INR 40+ lakh. Top private deemed-universities for NRI: INR 40-50 lakh. International institutes operating in India through partnerships: INR 50+ lakh.
KCET / EAMCET / MHT-CET state quota — Specifically Karnataka, AP, Telangana, Maharashtra State quota fees at private engineering colleges are dramatically cheaper than management quota. For Karnataka private unaided colleges (KCET government quota): a little over INR 1 lakh a year in tuition in recent years (about INR 1.06 lakh in 2024-25, with a 7.5% increase allowed for 2025-26), while management quota fees are set by each college and commonly run several times higher. Why prices vary so much
- Government subsidies — IITs/NITs and state colleges receive central / state subsidies, allowing tuition below market rate.
- Institute reputation — BITS, VIT, SRM charge premium based on placement record + alumni network value.
- Branch — CSE/IT typically cost INR 50,000-1 lakh more per year than Mechanical/Civil at private colleges. AI-DS / Cyber Security / Aerospace cost INR 25,000-50,000 more than mainstream branches.
- Quota — State quota < Other state quota < Management quota < NRI quota. The same college can have a 3-5x fee difference between state and NRI quotas.
- Hostel + Mess — Adds roughly INR 1-3.5 lakh per year. Premium colleges (MIT WPU, VIT) charge INR 2.5-3.5 lakh hostel + mess vs INR 1-1.5 lakh at NITs.
