Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore, is a leading private deemed-to-be-university located at Tiruvalam Road, Katpadi, Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Founded in 1984 by Dr. G. Viswanathan as Vellore Engineering College with an initial intake of 180 students affiliated to the University of Madras, it was granted Deemed University status under Section 3 of the UGC Act in 2001 and renamed VIT University in 2006.
