VIT Bhopal University is a state private university established in 2017 under the Madhya Pradesh Private University Act, following approvals granted by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2016. Sponsored by the Vellore Institute of Technology Trust under Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan, VIT Bhopal is the third major campus of the VIT ecosystem after Vellore (1984) and Chennai (2010). Current leadership includes Vice-Chancellor Prof. Satish Kumar Modh, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. T. B. Sridharan, Vice-President Dr. Sankar Viswanathan and Acting Registrar KK Nair (in charge since 26 November 2024).

VIT Bhopal runs an extensive on-campus hostel system on its 100-acre Kothrikalan campus near Bhopal. First-year B.Tech students are typically allocated triple-sharing rooms with double and single occupancy from the second year by seniority. Annual hostel and mess fees for 2025-26 broadly fall in the ₹1,30,000-1,80,000 range inclusive of mess. Mess service includes vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain and Continental options serving North Indian, Madhya Pradesh local cuisine, South Indian and Continental rotations. Wi-Fi, hot-water geysers, gymnasium access, study lounges and CCTV are standard.
