About Southern Academy of Maritime Studies
Southern Academy of Maritime Studies is an institution in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Southern Academy of Maritime Studies is privately managed and self-financing. It is affiliated to Indian Maritime University. Southern Academy of Maritime Studies offers 5 programmes at undergraduate level. They are B.Sc. In Nautical Science, Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc (Nautical Science) (Dns), General Purpose Rating (Gp Rating), Stcw and Orientation Course For Catering Personnel. The stated sanctioned intake across these programmes totals 40 seats. Resolved unit: Southern Academy of Maritime Studies is a specialised maritime training institute/college, not the separate sibling SAMS College of Engineering and Technology. The official group page identifies it as DGS-approved Maritime Training Institute MTI No. 402016, affiliated with Alagappa University and IMU-Chennai. IMU's affiliated-college list names Southern Academy of Maritime Studies, Chennai, for the DGS-approved DNS programme, with 40 students per August batch and affiliation since 2009. The official site separately lists B.Sc. Nautical Science (Alagappa University; D.G. Shipping approved) and B.E. Marine Engineering under the sibling SAMS College of Engineering and Technology (Anna University; AICTE and D.G. Shipping approved). The institution's site states that it has advanced simulators, a fully functional DGS-approved ship-in-campus and a library, but does not publish a numeric simulator/laboratory count. Captain Gopinath is identified as Principal; his qualification is Master Mariner with an MBA in Shipping and Logistics. No institution-specific faculty totals, research metrics, attendance rule, medium or exam pattern were found in the cited official pages. The DG Shipping search result also shows a show-cause/suspension/withdrawal-orders page naming MTI 402016; current approval status should be checked directly with DG Shipping for the 2026-27 cycle. The site states that B.Sc. Nautical Science is affiliated to Alagappa University, while DNS is affiliated to Indian Maritime University. The IMU affiliated-college result lists Southern Academy of Maritime Studies for DNS, batch capacity 40 (Aug batch), with a 2021 affiliation reference. The official site claims a 25+ year legacy and an operating ship, advanced simulators and library, but no numeric facility figures were published in the reviewed evidence. The campus address is in Thiruvallur District although the institution markets it as Chennai. Target year 2026-27: no specific current-year affiliation or intake document was located.
