National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal is one of India's oldest and most established National Institutes of Technology, founded in 1959 as the Regional Engineering College (REC) Warangal — the first of the seventeen original Regional Engineering Colleges established by the Government of India under a joint Centre-State funding model to expand engineering education across the country. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who formally inaugurated the institute on 18 October 1959, making it the oldest of all the present-day NITs.
