About NIT Silchar
National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) is one of the original Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) of India, established in 1967 as the Regional Engineering College Silchar under a joint partnership between the Government of India and the Government of Assam. It was one of the seventeen RECs set up across the country during 1959-1967 to provide regionally distributed centres of excellence in engineering education and to address the need for a strong engineering education base in every region of independent India.

First-year B.Tech students typically get triple-occupancy rooms with double rooms from the second year and single rooms from the third year by seniority. Annual hostel and mess fees for 2025-26 are heavily subsidised — typically ₹35,000-55,000 per academic year inclusive of mess.
