IIT Bhilai — Fees, Placements & Admission 2026

IIT Bhilai follows the standard IIT fee structure set by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. For the 2026-27 academic session, B.Tech tuition is approximately Rs 2 lakh per year (split into two semester payments), with additional charges for hostel room rent, mess advance, medical fee, examination fee, and gymkhana subscription pushing the total to approximately Rs 2.5-3 lakh per year for general-category students. SC/ST/PwD students receive a 100% tuition fee waiver under MoE guidelines. Students from families with annual income below Rs 1 lakh receive full tuition remission, and families with income between Rs 1-5 lakh receive a two-thirds tuition waiver. Hostel and mess charges at IIT Bhilai follow the IIT-wide cost-recovery model. Combined hostel room rent, mess advance, electricity and water charges, and hostel-cultural fee typically total approximately Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000 per year. The permanent campus at Kutelabhata has separate hostels for boys and girls with double-occupancy and triple-occupancy rooms. Mess operations are cost-recovery with students paying actual food cost, typically Rs 3,000-4,500 per month. A refundable caution deposit applies at admission. IIT Bhilai offers multiple scholarship streams following the standard IIT framework. SC/ST/PwD students receive a full 100% tuition fee waiver and additionally qualify for MoE Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarships. General/OBC students from families with annual income under Rs 1 lakh receive a complete tuition waiver, and those with family income Rs 1-5 lakh receive a two-thirds tuition waiver. Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (MCM) is available for academically strong students from economically weaker sections. National Talent Scholarship, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY, legacy rollover), Inspire-SHE, and institute-administered merit scholarships also apply. PG students are eligible for MHRD/GATE fellowships.

B.Tech admission at IIT Bhilai is through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling using JEE Advanced ranks — the single centralised pathway for all 23 IITs. The process runs in three stages: first, qualify JEE Main (NTA) in January or April sessions; second, clear JEE Main cutoff to be eligible for JEE Advanced (organising IIT announced annually); third, register on josaa.nic.in with the JEE Advanced roll number, submit branch and institute preferences for IIT Bhilai, and participate in the six allocation rounds. The Common Seat Allocation System (CSAB) handles vacant seats after JoSAA rounds. Eligibility for B.Tech admission at IIT Bhilai follows the standard JEE Advanced / JoSAA framework. General, OBC, and EWS candidates need 75% aggregate in class 12 (or rank in the top 20 percentile of their board examination), while SC, ST, and PwD candidates need 65% aggregate (or top 20 percentile). Candidates must qualify JEE Main in the current year, then appear for JEE Advanced, and must feature in the JEE Advanced All India Common Rank List (or category-specific list) to be eligible for JoSAA counselling. IIT Bhilai is an Institute of National Importance established in 2016 under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2016, which added IIT Bhilai along with IIT Goa, IIT Jammu, IIT Dharwad, IIT Tirupati, and IIT Palakkad to the Second Schedule of the principal Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. As an Institute of National Importance, IIT Bhilai enjoys statutory parity with older IITs, reports directly to the Ministry of Education, Government of India, is funded through the consolidated IIT grant, and operates under its own Board of Governors. The President of India serves as the Visitor of all IITs. IIT Bhilai confers its own degrees and is not under UGC jurisdiction in the same way that state universities are — the IIT Act governs its statutory framework.

IIT Bhilai's permanent campus is located at Kutelabhata Village, Durg District, Chhattisgarh 491001, approximately 35 km from the state capital Raipur and adjacent to the Bhilai Steel Plant township — one of India's earliest public-sector industrial cities. The permanent campus spans approximately 450 acres of planned academic, residential, and research infrastructure being developed in phases. IIT Bhilai began academic operations in August 2016 from a temporary campus at Government Engineering College (GEC) Raipur, with IIT Hyderabad as mentor, and progressively shifted to the permanent campus as construction was completed. Proximity to Bhilai Steel Plant creates strong research collaboration opportunities in metallurgy and materials science.

IIT Bhilai offers B.Tech programmes through eight academic disciplines. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering delivers CSE, the Department of Electrical Engineering delivers EE, the Department of Mechanical Engineering delivers ME, and the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence delivers DSAI — a relatively new and highly sought-after interdisciplinary programme. Additional B.Tech branches include Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering and Computational Mechanics (a distinctive programme unique to a few IITs), and Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering (leveraging proximity to Bhilai Steel Plant).
