IISc Bangalore is unique among Indian engineering institutions — primarily a research and post-graduate institute with a 4-year B.S. (Research) programme as its only undergraduate offering. The B.S. programme attracts the very top tier of JEE Advanced and KVPY rankers (typical entry rank: under 1,000 in JEE Advanced or top KVPY/INSPIRE scholarship holders). Placements are dominated by research and graduate-school pathways — over 60% of the cohort proceeds to PhD or MS programmes at MIT, Stanford, CMU, ETH Zurich, Cambridge, Oxford, Caltech and other top global universities, often with full funding. Direct industry placements happen in deep-tech and research roles at Google Research, Microsoft Research, Adobe Research, Bell Labs, Qualcomm Research, NVIDIA Research and Indian deep-tech startups, with packages typically ₹40-90 LPA for technical roles. ISRO, DRDO and BARC also recruit through campus placements with research-track positions. The IISc Office of Career Counselling and Placement provides individualised counselling for graduate-school applications, fellowship preparation and industry placements.
