Engineering pathway (4 years B.Tech)
Year 1-4: B.Tech at IIT/NIT (₹13-14 Lakh total) or top private (₹16-25 Lakh) or budget college (~₹4-8 Lakh). Includes tuition + hostel + mess.
Year 5+ (post-graduation):
- IIT/NIT graduate: avg first salary ₹15-25 LPA
- Top private (BITS, VIT, Manipal): avg first salary ₹8-15 LPA
- Budget college: avg first salary ₹3-5 LPA
5-year net financial position (assuming IIT/NIT path): -₹13L (fees) + ₹20L (year 5 earnings) = +₹7L. By year 7-8, fees are recovered.
Integrated MBA pathway (5 years IPM/BBA + MBA)
IIM Indore IPM (5-year integrated): Total cost ~₹22 Lakh (3-year UG + 2-year MBA at IIM-I). IIM Rohtak IPM: ~₹17 Lakh. IIM Ranchi IPM, IIM Jammu IPM: ~₹15-18 Lakh.
Year 5+ (post-graduation):
- IPM graduate: avg first salary ₹15-25 LPA (similar to IIT graduate due to MBA premium)
- BBA + non-IIM MBA: avg first salary ₹8-12 LPA
5-year net financial position (IIM IPM path): -₹22L (fees) + ₹20L = -₹2L. Slightly behind engineering at year 5 due to higher fees, but converges quickly.
Which path for whom
Choose Engineering if:
- Strong PCM aptitude
- Genuine interest in technology, building, problem-solving with code/hardware
- Want optionality for MS abroad, PhD, technical careers
- Want flexibility — can pivot to MBA later (most do)
Choose Integrated MBA if:
- Strong CAT-style aptitude (logical reasoning, data interpretation, English)
- Clear interest in business, finance, marketing, consulting
- Want to skip the engineering→MBA detour and go straight to business career
- Top IPM (IIM-I, IIM-K) cutoffs are accessible
Risk factors
Engineering risk: If you can''t place at tier-1 college, your placement may be ₹3-5 LPA at tier-3 — making fees recovery slow.
Integrated MBA risk: Only top 4-5 IIM IPM programmes are competitive. BBA from non-top institutions has limited career value compared to BBA from Christ, NMIMS, Symbiosis.
Combined pathway (most popular)
Many students do B.Tech → 2-3 years work → MBA which gives:
- Engineering technical depth ✓
- Work experience for MBA admissions ✓
- MBA career options at year 6-7
This combined pathway is what ~30% of Indian engineering graduates eventually do.
