IIT Dhanbad vs IIPE Visakhapatnam

The short answer: compare the branch and the admission route

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. IIPE is the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy, Visakhapatnam, a Government of India Institution of National Importance. IIPE’s current address is Vangali, Sabbavaram, Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh—not Hyderabad.

Our recommendation: start with the branch you actually want. IIT Dhanbad has a broader undergraduate programme menu; IIPE has a focused set of four BTech options for 2026–27. For overlapping branches, compare curriculum, the correct application process, a category-specific fee bill and branch-level outcomes. Neither an IIT label nor a small cohort’s placement percentage is a sufficient decision on its own.

Courses available for 2026–27

IIPE lists four BTech programmes: Chemical Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering. It is no longer accurate to describe its undergraduate menu as only Chemical and Petroleum. Mathematics and Computing should not be relabelled Computer Science and Engineering.

IIT Dhanbad offers those overlapping fields and a wider range: its 2026 admissions page also lists options such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Civil, Mining, Engineering Physics and other specialised engineering programmes, alongside integrated degree options.

If you want CSE specifically, do not treat IIPE Mathematics and Computing as the same offer. If you want Petroleum or Chemical Engineering, read each institute’s branch curriculum and electives rather than comparing institution-wide course counts. Integrated programmes also need their own duration and fee comparison.

Admissions: JEE Advanced does not mean the same counselling

IIT Dhanbad: the normal undergraduate route is JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA seat allocation and the institute’s reporting process.

IIPE: admission is based on JEE Advanced 2026 rank, but applicants must apply separately through IIPE’s BTech portal. Do not assume a JoSAA registration will allocate you an IIPE seat. The IIPE page says it does not consider the preparatory rank for UG admission.

Check the applicable year’s qualifying-examination subjects, board marks/top-percentile, category documentation, seat rules and application dates on the official pages. This guide describes the 2026–27 route; it does not imply that applications remain open. No management-quota or paid direct-admission route is established by these sources.

Fees: a first-semester bill is not an annual fee

IIT Dhanbad, UG admission 2026: the official admission-fee PDF lists ₹1,65,900 for the standard General/OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS column. This consists of ₹1,00,000 tuition, ₹41,400 other fees, ₹5,000 JoSAA processing charges and ₹19,500 Monsoon Semester mess charges. It is an admission/first-semester figure, not a full-year or four-year cost.

The same PDF lists ₹65,900 for SC/ST/PwD and for the qualifying below-₹1-lakh-income column. For qualifying family income of ₹1–5 lakh, it lists ₹99,233. The HTML fee page differs on that last total; this guide uses the internally consistent admission PDF. Category/income concessions require the specified documentation.

Seat-acceptance money already paid is credited against the admission total, not added again. In the standard ₹1,65,900 column, the PDF shows ₹30,000 already paid and ₹1,35,900 balance. Do not call all “other fees” hostel rent or extrapolate this bill across eight semesters.

IIPE: an exact, current 2026–27 fee schedule could not be verified for this guide. We therefore do not publish a tuition, hostel, mess or four-year total, and cannot responsibly name a cheaper institution. Obtain the official programme/category-specific bill and remission conditions before comparing costs.

Placements: matched 2025 reports, with denominators

For a same-year comparison, the official 2025 graduating-batch reports give the following counts. IIT Dhanbad uses actively participating students as its denominator; IIPE uses registered students. Neither denominator is necessarily the entire graduating class.

• Chemical Engineering: IIT Dhanbad placed 31 of 38 active participants (81.58%); IIPE placed 23 of 24 registered students (95.83%).
• Petroleum Engineering: IIT Dhanbad placed 61 of 66 active participants (92.42%); IIPE placed 7 of 7 registered students (100%). Seven students is a small base, not a guarantee for a future applicant.
• All BTech in those reports: IIT Dhanbad placed 698 of 795 active participants (87.80%); IIPE placed 30 of 31 registered students (96.77%). These totals mix different branch menus and cohort sizes, so they are not a like-for-like institutional ranking.

IIPE also publishes a separately dated 2026 update. We do not mix it with IIT’s 2025 report here. Comparable branch-specific salary distributions and IIPE outcomes for the new programme mix were not verified; there is no supported salary or return-on-investment winner in this guide. An institution-wide highest CTC is not a typical branch salary or take-home pay.

Before accepting an offer

• Compare the exact branch syllabus, electives and degree duration. Choose IIT Dhanbad for access to its broader programme menu only if that breadth matters to your goals—not as a promise of an easy branch change.
• Complete the correct application/reporting process: JoSAA for the normal IIT route; a separate IIPE application for IIPE.
• Get a full current bill from both institutions, including hostel, mess, deposits and the tuition remission you personally qualify for.
• Plan travel to the actual campus: Dhanbad versus IIPE’s Vangali/Sabbavaram address, rather than assuming a central Visakhapatnam location.
• Read branch-level placement counts and denominators, then ask about higher-study plans and unplaced students. Past percentages do not guarantee your outcome.
