IISc Bangalore vs ISI Kolkata

Start with the degree, not a universal winner

IISc is the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. ISI Kolkata is the Kolkata headquarters of the Indian Statistical Institute. They offer different undergraduate pathways: a broad science-and-research foundation at IISc, mathematical statistics through ISI’s BStat, and distinct engineering or statistical-data-science options.

Our recommendation: shortlist IISc BS (Research) if you want to explore sciences before a research specialisation; shortlist ISI BStat if mathematical statistics is already your clear interest. Compare IISc BTech Mathematics & Computing with ISI BSDS separately: they are not interchangeable degrees, and BSDS has different fees and housing arrangements from BStat.

This is a programme-level guide for 2026–27, not a ranking or a promise of admission, stipend or placement.

Courses and learning fit

IISc BS (Research): a four-year, research-intensive programme with interdisciplinary training followed by a major and a faculty-guided research project. The official undergraduate site lists Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Physics as majors.

IISc BTech: Mathematics & Computing is joined by Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Mechanics & Computing from academic year 2026. Check the curriculum of the specific branch rather than treating every IISc course as computer science.

ISI Kolkata BStat (Hons): a three-year degree in statistical theory, methods and applications, with mathematics and some computer science. BStat is offered only at Kolkata. ISI’s BMath is at Bengaluru, not Kolkata.

ISI BSDS: the four-year Bachelor (Hons.) of Statistical Data Science has a Kolkata option alongside Delhi and Bengaluru. Its emphasis is statistical machine learning, computational statistics and data analytics. Teaching is hybrid across centres, but students must be physically present at their centre; this is not a study-from-home course.

Admissions: four programmes, different instructions

• IISc BS (Research), domestic route: the 2026 selection page lists JEE Advanced and the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). Applicants must also apply through the IISc admissions portal. It specifies Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 10+2 and 60%/first class, relaxed to pass class for SC/ST candidates. Read the current category, qualifying-year and nationality rules before applying.
• IISc BTech: follow the separate BTech admissions instructions linked below. Do not assume that the BS application or IAT route covers BTech.
• ISI BStat: 10+2 with Mathematics and English is required. The ordinary 2026 route uses two written mathematics tests, including objective and descriptive questions, with no interview. A limited, eligible INMO-awardee route is separate and uses an interview; it is not an exemption for all Olympiad participants.
• ISI BSDS: the 2026 programme page lists JEE Main or CUET (UG) scores from the specified 2025/2026 sessions. Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and English, qualifying-year requirements and category-specific board marks apply. Use the BSDS application and business rules, not the BStat test route.

These are the published 2026–27 routes, not a statement that applications are still open. Foreign-national and OCI rules can differ.

Fees and stipends: keep the programmes separate

IISc BS, 2026–27: annual tuition is ₹80,000 for General/OBC/EWS students. The published first-year academic total is ₹1,00,800, including ₹15,000 in refundable deposits. For SC/ST/PwD students tuition is fully waived and the published first-year total is ₹20,800. These are academic charges, not an all-in hostel-and-mess budget. They must not be applied to IISc BTech; its fee amount is not verified in this guide.

ISI BStat: eligible non-sponsored students pay no tuition. The prospectus lists a ₹5,000 monthly stipend and ₹5,000 annual contingency grant, subject to the institute’s conditions and satisfactory progress. OCI students are not entitled to the stipend. Free tuition does not mean food and every other expense are free.

ISI BSDS: the prospectus lists ₹1,00,000 tuition plus ₹2,500 other academic fees per semester, before applicable tuition waivers. BSDS is excluded from regular stipend entitlement. Tuition waivers/remissions exist for specified categories and income bands; they do not automatically waive other charges or rent.

Do not compare an annual tuition figure with a semester bill or multiply a first-year total into a whole-course estimate. Budget separately for accommodation, food, travel and personal costs.

Housing, careers and your decision

Housing matters especially for BSDS: ISI says no hostel accommodation will be provided to BSDS students in 2026–27, including Kolkata. Plan off-campus housing. For other ISI programmes, hostel accommodation is not guaranteed to every student and food charges remain payable. Confirm IISc housing availability and charges separately.

Both institutions offer routes towards further study and quantitative or research-oriented careers, but we have not verified comparable undergraduate salary or placement datasets for these specific programmes and years. ISI’s statement about master’s placements is not a BStat or BSDS placement rate. There is therefore no supported salary-based winner here.

• Choose your degree and curriculum first: broad science research, engineering, mathematical statistics or applied statistical data science.
• Check the correct entrance route and application, rather than assuming one exam or counselling process covers both institutions.
• Compare net programme-specific charges after your own waiver eligibility, then add living costs.
• For BSDS Kolkata, account for physical centre attendance and off-campus accommodation before accepting an offer.
