HITS Chennai drives focused research across IoT, smart cities, AI/ML, sustainable energy, automotive engineering, aerospace systems, marine engineering, biotechnology and structural engineering. The institute houses the Centre for Excellence in IoT and Cyber-Physical Systems (sponsored by MeitY), the Centre for Sustainable Mobility (in collaboration with Hyundai and Renault Nissan), the Centre for Aerospace Research, the Centre for Marine Engineering, the Centre for Cyber Security and Forensics, and the Bio-Research and Innovation Centre. Faculty publish 220-260 SCI/Scopus papers annually with research grants from DST, AICTE, MEITY, DRDO, ARDB (Aeronautical Research and Development Board), ISRO, NSTL (Naval Science and Technological Laboratory), TANSCST and various private industry collaborations totaling INR 14-18 crore in any given fiscal year. The institute has filed 75+ patents in IoT, biomedical devices, automotive systems, aerospace systems and renewable energy, with 10 commercialised. Active industry-academia partnerships include Microsoft Research India, IBM, Hyundai, Renault Nissan, Ashok Leyland, BMW, Caterpillar, Daimler India, Tata Technologies, ISRO and ARDB. The university operates 6 international research collaborations (Cranfield UK, Purdue, NTU Singapore, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, NIT Trichy).
