IIPE Visakhapatnam runs separate boys and girls hostels on the Vizag campus. First-year B.Tech students typically get double-occupancy rooms with single rooms from the second year by seniority. Annual hostel and mess fees for 2025-26 are subsidised — typically ₹40,000-65,000 per academic year inclusive of mess (Ministry of Petroleum subsidy). Mess service includes vegetarian, non-vegetarian and Jain options. Wi-Fi, hot-water geysers, gymnasium access, study lounges and CCTV are standard. The Vizag coastal climate is humid with monsoon rains.

IIPE runs comprehensive financial aid. SC/ST students receive full tuition waivers plus Central Government Post-matric Scholarship. Defence wards qualify for PM Scholarship Scheme. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas runs additional dedicated scholarships for petroleum engineering students with mandatory service obligations to ONGC, Oil India and major Indian oil-and-gas PSUs. International undergraduate students from select developing nations qualify for ICCR scholarships. Education loans through SBI, Canara Bank and HDFC Credila are facilitated.

Research at IIPE Visakhapatnam is uniquely focused on petroleum, energy and chemical engineering. The institute hosts the Centre for Petroleum Engineering Studies, Centre for Energy Engineering, dedicated reservoir simulation and drilling technology research facilities. Funded projects come from DST, AICTE, MeitY, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (extensive funding), ONGC, Reliance, Cairn Energy and several international oil-and-gas companies.
