NIT Sikkim drives focused research across AI/ML, IoT, smart cities, sustainable energy, biomass and biotechnology, environmental and climate change studies (Himalayan region focus), and structural engineering for seismic zones. The institute houses Centre of Excellence in AI and Robotics, the Centre for Renewable Energy and Climate Change, the IoT and Smart City Lab, and the Centre for Cyber Security. Faculty publish 120-140 SCI/Scopus papers annually with research grants from DST, MeitY, DRDO, ISRO, SERB, North Eastern Council and Sikkim State Council on Science and Technology totaling INR 8-12 crore at any given time. The institute has filed 30+ patents across image processing, NLP, IoT systems and renewable energy. Active industry-academia partnerships include collaborations with Sikkim Power Department, NHPC, ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police, for terrain-engineering research), ISRO, DRDO and BSNL Sikkim. PhD intake is 25-30 scholars annually, with monthly fellowship of INR 31,000-35,000 + HRA. The institute operates 3 international student exchange agreements (NUS, KAIST, Tribhuvan University Kathmandu).
