The institute's heritage as Regional Engineering College Rourkela (1961) gives it 60+ years of alumni — among the deepest engineering alumni networks in Eastern India. The NIT Rourkela Alumni Association runs strong chapters in Rourkela, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, the Bay Area, Boston, New York, London, Singapore and Dubai with annual reunions and the NIT-R Foundation supporting scholarships, research initiatives and the NIT-R Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre.
