IIT (BHU) Varanasi consistently ranks among the top 10 in NIRF Engineering. Research spans every major engineering and applied science discipline with particular strengths in Pharmaceutical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering — uniquely strong programmes within the IIT system. The institute hosts research centres for Pharmaceutical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, Centre for Excellence in Renewable Energy, Centre for Excellence in Materials Science and Innovation Centre alongside multiple discipline-specific centres. The institute files 50+ patents annually with publications in Nature, Science, Physical Review Letters, IEEE Transactions, ACM and top Springer/Elsevier venues. Major funding from DST, AICTE, MeitY, DBT, Ministry of Coal, Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and several international agencies. Industry partnerships span Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Coal India, BHEL, NTPC, Hindustan Zinc, Robert Bosch, Texas Instruments, Microsoft, Google and many deep-tech startups. International collaborations span MIT, Stanford, ETH Zurich, Cambridge, Oxford and several Asian and European universities.
