IEM Kolkata drives focused research across IoT, smart cities, AI/ML, sustainable energy, automotive engineering, biotechnology, materials science and structural engineering. The institute houses the Centre for Excellence in IoT and Cyber-Physical Systems (sponsored by MeitY), the Centre for Sustainable Mobility, the Centre for Cyber Security, the Centre for Robotics and Drones, and the Bio-Research Innovation Centre. Faculty publish 220-260 SCI/Scopus papers annually with research grants from DST, AICTE, MEITY, DRDO, BARC, ISRO, WBDST (West Bengal Department of Science and Technology) and various private industry collaborations totaling INR 14-18 crore in any given fiscal year. The institute has filed 65+ patents in IoT, biomedical devices, automotive systems and renewable energy, with 8 commercialised. Active industry-academia partnerships include Microsoft Research India, IBM, Cognizant, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Steel, ITC, ISRO, DRDO and CSIR-IICB Kolkata. The university operates 6 international research collaborations (Cornell, Purdue, NTU Singapore, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IISc).
