FAQ
SSMCE FAQs
When was Dr. SMCE established and who runs it?
Dr. Sri Sri Sri Shivakumara Mahaswamy College of Engineering (Dr. SMCE) was established in 2008 at Byranayakanahalli in Nelamangala taluk of Bengaluru Rural district. The college is run by the Kammagondanahalli Sri Maruthi Seva Samithi and is named in tribute to Dr. Sree Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamiji, the Founder-President of Sree Siddaganga Math in Tumakuru, who headed the Math from 1941 until his passing in 2019 at the reputed age of 111.
Who was Sree Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamiji?
Shivakumara Swamiji was a Lingayat seer and one of the most revered educators of twentieth-century Karnataka. Initiated into the monastic order in 1930 and made Mathadhyaksha of Sree Siddaganga Math in 1941, he built the Math into one of India's largest free-residential education movements, famously running a Trikala Dasoha (thrice-daily free meals) for thousands of rural students. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2015 and the Karnataka Ratna. The Sree Siddaganga Education Society he inspired today operates more than 130 institutions from nursery school to engineering, medical and management colleges.
Where is the Dr. SMCE campus and how far is it from Bengaluru?
The campus is located at Byranayakanahalli in Nelamangala Taluk of Bengaluru Rural district, approximately 30 kilometres from Bengaluru city along the Nelamangala-Tumakuru highway corridor. The location sits on a peri-urban stretch with direct highway access, is within commuting distance of manufacturing and logistics clusters in the Bengaluru Rural district, and offers a lower cost of living than comparable colleges inside the Bengaluru urban core.
Which university is Dr. SMCE affiliated to and what approvals does it hold?
Dr. SMCE is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The institution is also listed on the official COMEDK Karnataka Professional Colleges Foundation portal, which enables participation in COMEDK UGET admissions alongside the Karnataka CET pathway. NAAC and NBA accreditation status is not independently confirmed in aggregator data and should be verified with the college directly.
What B.E. branches does Dr. SMCE offer?
Dr. SMCE offers the classical five-branch B.E. portfolio under VTU: Computer Science and Information Science Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. The mix covers both the software-oriented disciplines that drive the Bengaluru IT economy and the core-engineering branches that feed into manufacturing, power and infrastructure industries operating along the Nelamangala-Dabaspet-Tumakuru corridor.
How does a Karnataka student apply for B.E. admission?
Karnataka-domicile students apply through the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). Eligibility is the standard VTU norm — a pass in 10+2 / Pre-University with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Computer Science or Electronics, and a minimum aggregate of 45% (40% for SC/ST/OBC). After KCET results, rank-holders register on the KEA portal, participate in option entry and online counselling, and receive seat allotment for Dr. SMCE branches rank-wise.
What options exist beyond KCET for B.E. admission?
Candidates outside the KCET pool can apply through the COMEDK UGET administered by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka, which is open to candidates across India. Dr. SMCE is listed on the official COMEDK Karnataka Professional Colleges Foundation portal. The college also operates a Management Quota that is filled directly by the institution subject to AICTE/VTU eligibility norms, and three-year diploma holders can enter the second year of B.E. through the Karnataka Diploma CET lateral-entry route.
What facilities does the campus offer for outstation students?
Dr. SMCE operates separate hostel blocks for men and women on the Byranayakanahalli campus, with the academic blocks, hostels, dining and sports facilities situated on the same site. The central library is housed in a dedicated 1,000 sq.m. block with more than 20,000 volumes of VTU-prescribed texts and reference material. The campus has departmental laboratories built to VTU ordinance standards for mechanical workshops, electronic circuits, power electronics, microprocessors and applied computing, along with an auditorium, canteen, sports grounds and basic medical room.
