NIT Rourkela runs an extensive on-campus hostel system on its 600-acre campus. 17+ hostels — including Mahanadi, Brahmaputra, Tapti, Kaveri, Krishna, Tunga and others — house students by gender and academic year. First-year B.Tech students typically get triple-occupancy rooms with double rooms from the second year and single rooms from the third year by seniority. Annual hostel and mess fees for 2025-26 are heavily subsidised — typically ₹35,000-55,000 per academic year inclusive of mess. Mess service includes vegetarian, non-vegetarian and Jain options across hostels with student-elected mess secretaries; menus combine North Indian, South Indian, Bengali and limited Continental rotations. Wi-Fi, hot-water geysers, gymnasium access, study lounges, common rooms with TV, washing machines and CCTV-monitored entries are standard. The Rourkela weather is moderate with cold winters (8-12°C December-January) and hot summers. The campus has comprehensive dining including the Convention Centre, Cafeteria and several student-run cafés.
