MIT WPU Pune drives focused research across renewable energy, automotive engineering, AI/ML, IoT, smart cities, sustainable construction, biotechnology and peace studies. The institute houses the Centre for Sustainable Energy and Climate Change, the Centre for Industry 4.0 (in collaboration with Bosch and KPIT), the Centre for Cyber Security and Forensics, the Centre for Robotics and Automation, the Bio-Research and Innovation Centre, and the Maharashtra State Drone Research Centre. Faculty publish 280-320 SCI/Scopus papers annually with research grants from DST, AICTE, MEITY, DRDO, BARC, ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) and various private industry collaborations totaling INR 22-28 crore in any given fiscal year. The institute has filed 95+ patents in IoT, biomedical devices, automotive systems, drone tech and renewable energy, with 15 commercialised. Active industry-academia partnerships include Bosch, KPIT, Forbes Marshall, Cummins, Mahindra Research Valley, Tata Technologies, Bajaj Auto, ARAI, BARC, ISRO, DRDO and Volkswagen India. The university operates 8 international research collaborations (Cranfield UK, RWTH Aachen, MIT USA, NTU Singapore, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IISc, ISI Kolkata).
