IIT Kharagpur runs the largest on-campus hostel system among IITs on its 2,100-acre West Bengal campus — 22 halls of residence (named after rivers and other Indian heritage themes) housing 12,000+ students by gender and academic year. First-year B.Tech students typically get double or triple-occupancy rooms with single rooms from the second year by seniority. Annual hostel and mess fees for 2025-26 are heavily subsidised — typically ₹40,000-65,000 per academic year inclusive of mess. Each hall is largely self-governing with elected presidents, secretaries, mess secretaries and event managers. Mess service includes vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Bengali, North Indian and South Indian options across halls, with student-elected mess secretaries managing menus. Wi-Fi, hot-water geysers, gymnasium access, study lounges, common rooms with TV and CCTV-monitored entries are standard. The campus has comprehensive dining including the IITKGP Convention Centre, Tikka, Spring Roll, Tasty's, Adda and many student-run tea/coffee outlets.
