Research at IIT Dhanbad 2026

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad consistently ranks among the top 16 in NIRF Engineering. Research spans every major engineering and applied science discipline with particular strengths in Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mineral Engineering, Geological Engineering and Geophysical Engineering — uniquely positioned within the IIT system as the only IIT with these specialised programmes (especially Petroleum and Mining at undergraduate level). The institute hosts the Centre for Mineral Engineering, Centre for Petroleum Engineering, Centre for Mining and Mineral Sciences, Innovation and Incubation Centre and many discipline-specific centres. The institute files 50+ patents annually with publications in Nature, Science, IEEE Transactions, ACM and top Springer/Elsevier venues. Major funding from DST, AICTE, MeitY, Ministry of Coal, Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, ONGC, Coal India and several international agencies. Industry partnerships span ONGC, Oil India, Coal India, NTPC, BHEL, Tata Steel, Reliance Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, Schlumberger, Halliburton, Cairn Energy and many deep-tech startups.
