NIT Uttarakhand drives focused research across AI/ML, IoT, smart cities, sustainable energy (hydro-power given Himalayan rivers), biotechnology, signal processing, environmental engineering for Himalayan region (climate change, glacier dynamics, biodiversity), and structural engineering for high-seismic zones. The institute houses Centre of Excellence in AI and Robotics, the Centre for Hydropower and Renewable Energy, the IoT and Smart City Lab, and the Centre for Cyber Security. Faculty publish 130-150 SCI/Scopus papers annually with research grants from DST, MeitY, DRDO, ISRO, SERB, NHPC, ONGC and Uttarakhand State Council on Science and Technology totaling INR 9-12 crore at any given time. The institute has filed 30+ patents. Active partnerships include NHPC, ONGC, BHEL, Tehri Hydro Development Corp, ISRO, DRDO, ITBP and Uttarakhand State Power Corp. PhD intake is 25-30 scholars annually. Operates 4 international exchanges (NUS, KAIST, Tribhuvan Kathmandu, NTU Taipei).
