Research at IMU Chennai is uniquely focused on marine engineering, naval architecture, ocean engineering, ship hydrodynamics and maritime regulations. The institute hosts dedicated research centres for Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture. Funded projects come from DST, AICTE, MeitY, DBT, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Ministry of Shipping, Ministry of Earth Sciences and several global shipping companies. International collaborations span maritime universities in the UK (University College London), Norway, Singapore and the Netherlands.
