HBTU Kanpur drives focused research across Chemical Engineering (legacy strength — petroleum, polymers, biotech), AI/ML, IoT, smart cities, sustainable energy, biotechnology, materials science, automotive engineering and structural engineering. The institute houses the Centre for Petroleum Engineering Research (in collaboration with IOCL, GAIL, ONGC), the Centre for Plastic and Polymer Innovation, the Centre for Excellence in Chemical Engineering, the Centre for Cyber Security, the IoT and Embedded Systems Lab and the Bio-Research Innovation Centre. Faculty publish 280-320 SCI/Scopus papers annually with research grants from DST, AICTE, MEITY, DRDO, BARC, ISRO, Reliance Industries R&D, IOCL, GAIL India and various private industry collaborations totaling INR 18-22 crore. The institute has filed 95+ patents in Chemical Engineering, polymer technology, IoT systems and renewable energy, with 18 commercialised. Active partnerships: Reliance Industries, IOCL, GAIL India, ONGC, BPCL, BARC, BHEL, Microsoft Research India, ISRO, DRDO. Operates 8 international research collaborations (Cranfield UK, Imperial College London, NTU Singapore, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore, plus chemical engineering partnerships with Texas A&M and University of Cincinnati).
