Research at UPES Dehradun is uniquely focused on petroleum, energy and aerospace alongside CSE/ECE. The institute hosts the Centre for Petroleum Studies, Centre for Energy Studies, Centre for Aerospace Studies and Innovation Centre. Funded projects come from DST, AICTE, MeitY, DBT, ISRO, DRDO, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, ONGC, Reliance, Cairn Energy and several international oil-and-gas companies. Faculty publish in petroleum-specific journals (SPE Journal, Petroleum Science) alongside IEEE, Springer and Elsevier venues. Patents include themes around drilling technology, reservoir engineering, energy storage, aerospace propulsion and intelligent transportation. Industry partnerships span ONGC, Reliance, Cairn Energy, Schlumberger, Halliburton, Microsoft, Cisco and many oil-and-gas startups. International collaborations span universities in the US (Texas, Oklahoma — petroleum hubs), UK and Norway petroleum institutes.
