Choice 1, 2, 3 in KCET Counselling Explained — Which to Pick After Round 1

By CollegeAndFees Editors ·

After KCET Round 1 allotment, KEA gives every successful candidate three options to handle the seat: Choice 1 (accept and freeze), Choice 2 (accept and float to Round 2), Choice 3 (reject and re-enter). Picking the wrong choice can cost you a better seat or leave you without one. This guide explains each option with strategic recommendations.

Choice 1 — Accept and Freeze: You accept the Round 1 allotment as your final seat. KEA marks your candidature as exited from further centralised counselling. You pay the first-year fee within 7-10 days, report to the allotted college, and the academic process begins. After Choice 1, you cannot participate in Round 2 or 3 — even if a better seat becomes available later, you cannot upgrade. Pick Choice 1 only when you are certain the Round 1 allotment is your absolute target.

Choice 2 — Accept and Float: You accept the Round 1 allotment as a fallback while continuing to participate in Round 2. If Round 2 allots you a better seat, you receive the better one and the Round 1 allotment is automatically released. If Round 2 does not allot you a better seat, you keep the Round 1 allotment. There is one risk: in some KEA cycles, accepting Choice 2 requires you to pay the first-year fee at the Round 1 college upfront — confirm fee mechanics before choosing this option.

Choice 3 — Reject and Re-enter: You reject the Round 1 allotment and re-enter the option entry pool for Round 2 with the option to re-fill your preference list. This is the highest-risk option — if your Round 1 allotment was your only realistic match, rejecting it means you leave Round 2 without a seat. Pick Choice 3 only if (a) Round 1 allotment was significantly below your expected rank zone, (b) you have a clear list of better options that should reasonably allot in Round 2.

Choice 4 — Exit: You exit centralised counselling entirely without accepting any allotment. KEA marks your candidature as withdrawn. You can pursue COMEDK, management quota or direct admission separately. Pick Choice 4 only if you have already secured a non-KCET option you prefer (e.g. JEE Main JoSAA, BITSAT, KCET-equivalent state CET).

Decision Framework: - If Round 1 allotment matches your expected rank zone and is your top-3 college preference: Choice 1. - If Round 1 allotment is acceptable but you suspect Round 2 might have a better option: Choice 2. - If Round 1 allotment is significantly below your expected rank and you have safer options for Round 2: Choice 3. - If you have already accepted a non-KCET seat or are exiting Karnataka counselling entirely: Choice 4.

Common Mistakes: 1. Choosing Choice 1 too early. Many candidates accept Round 1 with Choice 1 because they fear losing the seat in Round 2. In practice, Choice 2 (float) gives the same protection while allowing upgrades. 2. Choosing Choice 3 with no realistic upgrade path. Rejecting a Round 1 seat without a clear Round 2 plan often leaves candidates without any seat after Round 2 closes. 3. Confusing Choice 4 with Choice 3. Choice 4 exits counselling permanently. Choice 3 keeps you in counselling but releases the Round 1 seat.

Strategic note: in KCET 2026, Round 2 typically opens 3-5 days after Round 1 closes. The window between Round 1 allotment and Choice deadline is usually 5 working days. Use this window to study the Round 1 cutoff sheet KEA publishes — it tells you which colleges still have vacancies for Round 2 and can confirm whether Choice 2 or Choice 3 is realistic.
